Hello Gorgeous
I hope this newsletter finds you in great spirits and health. It's Poovan here, and I'm thrilled to share my recent journey to the vibrant city of Kolkata during the incredible Durga Puja festival.
Durga Puja: A Feast for the Senses
Kolkata, also known as the "City of Joy," truly lives up to its name during Durga Puja. This annual festival, dedicated to the goddess Durga, is a spectacle of art, culture, and devotion.
Durga Puja in Kolkata has a rich and captivating history that dates to the late 16th century. The tradition began with King Raja Krishnachandra of Navadvipa, who organized the first grand celebration of Durga Puja to honour the goddess and mark her victory over the demon Mahishasura.
Over the years, the festival evolved and gained prominence, eventually becoming a public event in the 18th century. In 2021 Kolkata’s Durga Puja was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Today, Kolkata's Durga Puja has transformed into a grand cultural and artistic extravaganza, with thousands of exquisitely crafted pandals and an unmatched spirit of celebration, making it one of India's most significant and globally renowned festivals.
Here are three tips on how to make the most of this extraordinary event:
Kantara-themed Durga Puja Pandal
Tip #1: Immerse Yourself in the Pandals
The heart of Durga Puja lies in the beautifully decorated pandals, or temporary temples. Each pandal is a masterpiece, showcasing intricate artistry and creativity. Make it a point to visit as many pandals as possible, especially those that have won awards for their craftsmanship. Engage with the locals, learn about the themes, and be part of the celebrations.
Delicious Panner Butter Masala and Ghee Roti
Tip #2: Savor the Culinary Delights
Kolkata is renowned for its delectable food, and Durga Puja is the perfect time to savour authentic Bengali cuisine. From mouthwatering sweets like rasgulla and sandesh to savory treats like biryani and fish curry, the city offers a feast for the palate. Don't miss the food stalls and local eateries near the pandals for a true gastronomic experience.
Dhak Drum Musician during the last day of the festival
Tip #3: Dance to the Dhak Beats
The sound of the traditional dhak drums resonates throughout the city during Durga Puja. Join in the festivities and enjoy the rhythmic beats. The energy and enthusiasm of the locals are contagious, and you'll find yourself swept up in the celebration.
Next year Kolkata Durga Puja dates: 8-13 October 2024
